Staying Cool and Hydrated During Summer: An Ayurvedic Perspective
Staying Cool and Hydrated During Summer: An Ayurvedic Perspective
As summer arrives and temperatures rise, one of the most common questions I hear is:
"How can I stay hydrated and cool without constantly reaching for iced drinks?"
Many of us have been taught that the hotter it gets, the colder our drinks should be. Yet Ayurveda offers a different perspective.
While an ice-cold drink may feel refreshing in the moment, it can actually place additional stress on the digestive system.
Why Ayurveda Is Not a Fan of Ice-Cold Drinks
According to Ayurveda, healthy digestion depends on Agni, our digestive and metabolic fire.
When we repeatedly drink ice-cold beverages, especially with meals, we can temporarily dampen this digestive fire. Imagine pouring cold water onto a campfire. The fire does not disappear, but it certainly burns less efficiently.
Over time, weakened digestion may contribute to:
Bloating
Gas
Heaviness after meals
Sluggish digestion
Reduced absorption of nutrients
Ayurveda generally prefers water that is room temperature, slightly cool, or infused with herbs and fruits that naturally help the body regulate heat.
What About Fizzy Drinks?
Cold carbonated beverages add another challenge.
From an Ayurvedic perspective, the bubbles introduce excess air into the digestive tract. Air and movement are qualities associated with Vata, and too much of either can lead to:
Bloating
Burping
Digestive irregularity
Increased restlessness
The digestive system is trying to "cook" and transform what we consume. Excess carbonation can interrupt that process by creating unnecessary movement and disturbance.
And Kombucha?
This often surprises people.
While kombucha has become very popular and may work well for some individuals, Ayurveda views it a little differently.
Kombucha is:
Fermented
Sour
Usually carbonated
Often consumed cold
For some people, especially those prone to bloating, reflux, acidity, inflammation, hot flashes, or anxiety, these qualities may aggravate digestion rather than support it.
As always, Ayurveda does not deal in absolutes. If you enjoy an occasional kombucha and feel wonderful afterwards, that is valuable information. Yet for many people, there are gentler ways to stay hydrated and support digestion during the summer months.
Ayurveda Loves Cooling…But Not Shock
Cooling the body does not require ice.
In fact, some of the most refreshing summer drinks are simple infused waters prepared with herbs, flowers, fruits, and seeds.
My Favorite Summer Infused Waters
Simply add these ingredients to a pitcher of filtered water or your water bottle and allow them to infuse for at least 30–60 minutes. You can also leave them in throughout the day and continue sipping as the flavors gently develop.

A Small Summer Ritual
Instead of forcing yourself to drink more water, make it beautiful.
A few rose petals.
A sprig of mint.
A handful of cucumber slices.
Sometimes the simplest rituals help us reconnect with what our body has been asking for all along.
Wishing you a cool, nourished, and well-hydrated summer.
With love and gratitude,
